Frequently Asked Questions

You've got questions? I have answers!
Below are the most commonly asked questions regarding classes, performances, or booking. If you don't see the question below, feel free to contact me and ask away!

What do you wear for classes?

Anything comfortable. Yoga pants or leggings paired with a comfortable slightly form fitting shirt that allows movement and comfort is very important. You may wear skirts, harem pants or get slightly 'bellydance' dressed up for class - it's all about making you feel beautiful inside and out. Footwear is a personal choice - you may go barefoot, wear socks, or dance shoes of your choice.  Hipscarves are an optional item to wear around your hips, many students in class love to wear the jingly hipscarves.....makes them feel more like a bellydancer!

Where do I find bellydance music?

Do you make copies for your students?

I do not make copies of music for my students, many titles and songs are readily available on iTunes or eMusic. I have a student group where I post the titles of what I use from time to time...all easily found in online music stores.

What belly dance style do you teach?

I specialize in modern Arabic (Lebanese and Egyptian) cabaret and folkloric bellydance.  I teach the traditional and modern belly dance movements, techniques, and concepts that form the foundation of all the major belly dance styles.  This approach gives the student a solid base from which you can comfortably dance to any style of music and apply it to all genres and forms of bellydance.

Learning the basics is just the tip of the iceberg - from this point, the only limit is your imagination!

Is belly dance good exercise? Will I lose alot of weight?

Bellydance is based on natural body movement. It is an effective low to medium impact exercise for every part of the body. Many of the moves can be modified to suit your body's movement ability. Because of this, bellydance is great for all ages, sizes, and body types.

Combined with proper diet and regular practice you will lose some weight, but most importantly, gain strong muscles, endurance, flexibility, and over all well-being like in any other form of dance or fitness.

Do men bellydance?

Yes! There are specific movements geared towards men in Middle Eastern dance. Many of these movements are also similar to the movements found in Latin dance. Popular men's dances include Debke, Tahib, Folkloric styles, and Shaabi techniques. Men are always welcome in my classes - the basics are always the same and specific masculine techniques will be geared towards them.

I want to hire a bellydancer for a party, is it appropriate to have children around?

Absolutely! Everyone in the Middle East dances at parties - adults, kids, and grandparents too. Arabic parties are very festive and bellydancers add to keep the party moving! A professional bellydancer's attire and performance is always family friendly and well suited for all kinds of audiences. If you have specific guidelines such as cultural aspects (particularly to Middle Eastern audiences) or conservative guests at your event, please consult Etoile for specific costume and musical selections.

Do you perform at bachelor's parties?

Absolutely NOT! Bellydance is a family-oriented celebrated art and it is not appropriate to perform this dance to an all-male audience.

Etoile will not make any exceptions.
